School of Music

The School of Music at First Baptist Church is training musicians of all ages to skillfully use the musical ability God has given them. We offer private instruction on most band and orchestra instruments, as well as piano, guitar, harp and voice.

We also offer group classes for Beginning Violin, Beginning Adult Violin, Beginning Band, Concert Band and String Orchestra. New classes begin each fall.

Our Christian faculty members are degreed and/or have extensive experience in their areas of instruction.

Is music training beneficial? Here are just a few of the results from many studies conducted within the last 10 years which proclaim the importance of instrumental music training:

“…the National Education Longitudinal Study…showed that music participants received more academic honors and awards than non-music students, and that the percentage of music participants receiving A’s, A’s and B’s, or B’s was higher than the percentage of non-music participants receiving those grades.” (Source: National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988, First Follow-Up (1990), U.S. Dept. of Education)

“High School music students score higher on their SAT’s in both verbal and math than their peers.” (Source: Profile of SAT and Achievement Test Takers, The College Board, compiled by MENC, 2001)

“Research shows that piano students are better equipped to comprehend mathematical and scientific concepts. A group of preschoolers received private piano/keyboard lessons and singing lessons. A second group received private computer lessons. Those children who received piano/keyboard training performed 34% higher on tests measuring spatial-temporal ability than those who received computer training. Spatial-temporal is basically proportional reasoning - ratios, fractions, proportions and thinking in space and time. This concept has long been considered a major obstacle in the teaching of elementary math and science.” (Source: Neurological Research; February 28, 1997)
